Sparkle 8th July 2011
Setting up the room
To
kick-off Sparkle weekend, Manchester Concord decided that it would
be fun to host an entertainment evening at NewYork NewYork. The
event had been in planning for many months, with the aim of bringing
an alternative entertainment theme to Sparkle.
There
was a packed bill, so we decided to kick things off early with
the Concordettes, a music combo specially formed for the evening
from regular Concord members, Liz, Lee, Frances & Vanessa.
The Concordettes:
Liz, Lee, Frances & Vanessa
Liz
Liz really
enjoyed herself & had the audience joining in. Her version
of Peggy Lee's Fever was amazing.
The
Concordettes, although recently formed & with little opportunity
for rehersal performed for over half an hour, performing a wide
range of songs, from Radiohead to Peggy Lee, to Loewe & Lerner
Frances
Vanessa
Lee
Lee's "On the Street where
you live" & "Creep" were knock-out.
Jenny Louise
Jenny
Louise of Strawberry Elephant fame was next up. She treated us to
some amazing guitar virtuosity combined with some great audience
participation, with a special version of Donnovan's Colours.
Vannessa was next with a solo set, which finished with the
Kinks classic Lola.
Jezebel Steel, Lydia-Drag King & Krym-"Twilight Storm"
came next. They really introduced some excitment to the evening,
with fabulous displays of exotic entertainment.

Krym - "Twilight Storm"
Lydia - Switch Blade Grrl
Lydia also performed as "Switch
Blade Grrl", a VERY different look from the Drag King. She perfoomed
an incredible version of "What have You Done Today".
The Burlesque Boys, the ever so nearly French Francis
& Georgina entertained us with a selection of great songs -
by this time, the audience were all singing along.

Sally Jones
The evening was rounded off with
comedy sets from Sally Jones & Holly Grainger. They were both
hilariaously funny & it was amazing to see how they were able
to "work" the audience to maximum effect - a couple of real comedy
stars to watch out for in the future.
